Pune’s Ecozen Solutions secured $12.6 million in debt funding from UTI International and Spark Capital to accelerate India’s agricultural solar revolution. While global headlines fixate on AI labs, this deeptech startup tackles a crisis affecting 600 million rural Indians: unreliable electricity and food waste.

The Agricultural Cold Chain Crisis

India loses 15-20% of agricultural produce to spoilage annually, equivalent to $14 billion in losses according to FAO data. Ecozen’s Ecofrost solar-powered cold storage unit stores 3-5 tons of produce without grid dependency. Deployed across 11 states, these units operate in temperatures reaching 50°C. The startup claims 70% reduction in post-harvest losses for participating farmers.

Solar Irrigation at Scale

The fresh capital targets expansion of Ecotron, Ecozen’s solar water pumping system. India’s PM-KUSUM scheme aims to install 2.75 million off-grid solar pumps by 2026, creating a $4.3 billion market. Traditional diesel irrigation costs farmers $1,200-1,800 annually. Ecozen’s solar alternative eliminates fuel costs, generating payback within 3-4 years.

Indian climate tech raised $2.4 billion in 2024, triple the 2021 total per Bain & Company’s report. Ecozen’s next challenge: scaling beyond 100,000 farmers while maintaining quality control across India’s fragmented rural logistics. Success could enable international expansion to sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, where 1.2 billion people lack reliable electricity.
