Venezuela announced its largest military deployment in over a decade following the arrival of a US aircraft carrier off the Latin American coast. The mobilization involves 250,000 active military personnel and 1.5 million civilian militia members.

Military Deployment and Strategic Positioning

Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López announced on November 10, 2025, that Venezuelan armed forces entered a state of “maximum alert.” The deployment includes movement of S-300 anti-aircraft systems to coastal positions, activation of radar installations, and repositioning of Sukhoi Su-30 fighter aircraft.

Reuters confirmed that the USS Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group entered the Caribbean Sea on November 8, 2025, as part of scheduled naval exercises with Colombia and Panama. The carrier group includes four guided-missile destroyers and approximately 7,500 personnel.

Historical Context and Regional Reactions

US-Venezuela relations deteriorated significantly following the disputed 2024 presidential election. The United States, along with 47 other countries, refused to recognize Nicolás Maduro’s claimed victory, citing Carter Center election observation reports documenting irregularities.

Economic sanctions imposed since 2019 reduced Venezuela’s oil exports from 2.4 million barrels per day in 2018 to 780,000 barrels per day in October 2025. Brazil’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement calling for de-escalation. China and Russia expressed support for Venezuela’s territorial integrity. Venezuela’s military mobilization diverts resources from an already struggling economy.
