Indian brands are stitching winter fashion out of plastic waste

Indian fashion brands are increasingly turning plastic waste and organic fibres into winter clothing, aligning with the circular fashion trend driven by the growing environmental awareness of young consumers.

Recycled plastic powers circular winter fashion

News18 and The Tribune India describe how Indian companies are transforming plastic bottles from consumer products into polyester fabrics used in winter collections. In this model, plastic waste and organic fibres become raw materials for jackets and other garments, which is intended to reduce the volume of textile and plastic waste.

According to the studies cited, Generation Z shoppers are willing to pay around 10 percent more for sustainable products. This shift towards responsible consumption is translating into higher demand for recycled winter clothing, which in practice reinforces the circular fashion model based on the reuse of raw materials.

Sustainable brands and new materials in India

In India, brands are emerging that build their winter offerings on recycled materials and organic fibres. Their collections feature polyester fabrics made from processed bottles and organic cotton certified to GOTS, which is meant to reduce the use of conventional fibres and chemicals.

Within the trend described, it is emphasised that “recycled clothing plays a key role in the circular fashion model.” A second recurring message is the statement that “when old clothes and plastic bottles are transformed into warm winter garments, it brings about positive change”, which illustrates the shift in how designers and consumers perceive the value of waste.

Demand driven by Generation Z and market growth

A Deloitte report dated 28 November indicates that 65 percent of Generation Z consumers worldwide declare a willingness to pay a higher price for sustainable products. In India, the share of people from this generation who are concerned about the state of the environment reaches 84 percent, compared with 65 percent globally, which strengthens local demand for more responsible fashion.

The Indian sustainable fashion market was expected to reach a value of 272.51 million dollars in 2024 and, according to forecasts, could grow to 1.6 billion dollars by 2033. The global recycled polyester market is estimated at around 15–17 billion dollars in 2024–25, with the potential to grow to 30–40 billion dollars in the early 2030s, with recycled polyester from PET bottles currently dominating the recycled textiles segment.
