Today we celebrate: International Romani Day

March 5, 2026: Day 6 of Operation “Epic Fury” – Timeline and Analysis

Chronology of the last 24 hours (March 4, 08:00 CET → March 5, 08:00 CET)

Early Morning, March 5 (Night/Dawn CET)

  • Israeli airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs – Strikes targeted the Ghobeiry and Haret Hreik neighborhoods, preceded by evacuation orders. No immediate reports of casualties, but residents fired shots into the air to warn neighbors of the approaching attack.

  • Strike on Beddawi refugee camp (Northern Lebanon, near Tripoli) – At least 2 killed, including a Hamas official according to Lebanese media. This suggests targeted strikes far beyond the typical front line.

  • Iran denied launching a missile toward Turkey, claiming it “respects the sovereignty of its friendly neighbor.” The Turkish Ministry of Defense previously confirmed that NATO destroyed an Iranian ballistic missile flying through Iraq and Syria over the eastern Mediterranean. President Erdogan announced that Turkey is “taking all precautionary measures.” US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth assessed that the incident would not trigger NATO’s Article 5.

Evening / Night, March 4

  • The US Senate rejected a resolution to limit the President’s war powers – The vote was 47–53, nearly strictly along party lines. The only Democrat to vote against the resolution was John Fetterman; the only Republican to vote “for” was Rand Paul. Had it passed, it would have forced Trump to obtain Congressional approval to continue military actions in Iran.

  • Israel issued a 24-hour ultimatum for Iranian diplomatic representatives in Lebanon to leave the country. The ultimatum has expired—Human Rights Watch warned that the threat of attacking individuals not directly participating in hostilities could constitute a war crime.

  • Israeli ground troops are advancing further into southern Lebanon, issuing new evacuation orders “north of the Litani River.”

Afternoon, March 4

  • The Pentagon confirmed the sinking of the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena by a US submarine in the Indian Ocean (off the coast of Sri Lanka). A single Mk-48 torpedo was used—the first such US attack since WWII. More than 80 crew members (out of a 180-person crew) died; 32 were rescued by the Sri Lankan Navy.

  • The corvette IRIS Soleimani was also sunk in the Strait of Hormuz. In total, the US has destroyed over 20 Iranian warships and one submarine.

  • Hegseth at a Pentagon press conference: “We are accelerating, not slowing down. Iranian capabilities are evaporating by the hour. Full control of Iranian airspace—within days.” He announced a transition from stand-off long-range weapons to JDAM gravity bombs and Hellfire missiles directly over Iranian territory.

Morning / Early Afternoon, March 4

  • Iran: The Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) launched 230 drones at US personnel sites in the Middle East—including Ali Al Salem / Camp Arifjan in Kuwait, facilities in Erbil (Iraq), the US consulate in Dubai, and the port of Fujairah (UAE). The IRGC called these “the first powerful steps.”

  • Saudi Arabia: A missile hit the Ras Tanura refinery (Saudi Aramco’s largest), which had already suspended operations after intercepting Iranian drones.

  • The Iranian Ministry of Health updated the death toll: At least 926 killed and 6,186 injured from February 28 to 17:00 local time on March 4. Among the dead are 180 children under 18 (including three under 5); the youngest victim is a one-year-old in Tehran.

🟡 Disputed Claims (Divergent sources / incomplete verification)

IssueWhat the sides say
Death toll in IranIran Health Ministry: 926 killed. Independent organization Hengaw: 2,400 killed (310 civilians, ~2,090 military)—the difference stems from Iran concealing military losses.
Strike on girls’ school in Minab (Hormozgan)Iran: 165–180 schoolgirls killed in a strike on the “Shajareh Tayyebeh” school. Israel: “no knowledge of strikes in that area.” US: “investigating reports.” UN called for an “immediate, impartial investigation.”
Missile toward TurkeyTurkey/NATO: confirmed interception of a ballistic missile from Iran. Iran: categorically denies launching anything toward Turkey.
Status of Iranian nuclear programIAEA confirmed damage at Natanz but “no radiological consequences.” US claims “destruction of nuclear capabilities.” Independent verification of the scale of damage is impossible.
Mojtaba Khamenei elected as new leaderIran International, Times of India: Assembly of Experts chose Mojtaba under IRGC pressure. Iranian consulate in Mumbai: “officially denied.” NYT: Mojtaba is the frontrunner, but formal announcement was withheld for fear he would become a target.

🔴 Unknowns (High level of uncertainty)

  • Formal successor to Khamenei – despite reports about Mojtaba Khamenei, an official announcement hasn’t occurred; Arafi and Hassan Khomeini are also mentioned.

  • If and when the US/Israel will consider a ground operation in Iran – Hegseth says “all options on the table,” Senator Hawley: “ground troops would require Congressional approval.”

  • Reaction of Russia and China beyond diplomacy – both powers condemned the aggression, but analysts assess neither can provide real military support. A “credibility threshold” has been reached—further passivity will undermine the narrative of a multipolar world.

  • Iran’s real missile stockpiles and capabilities – Pentagon claims an 86% drop in ballistic missiles and 73% drop in drones compared to Day 1. Whether this is due to destruction, tactical decision-making, or conserving arsenal is unknown.

  • Situation of civilians in internet-blacked-out Iran – internet at 4% of normal levels. Independent verification of living conditions and access to food/medicine is extremely difficult.

Official Government Positions

🇺🇸 USA (Trump Administration)

  • Operation Goal: “destroy Iranian offensive missiles, missile production, navy, security infrastructure—and prevent Iran from possessing nuclear weapons.”

  • Change on March 4: Hegseth escalated rhetoric—”accelerating, not slowing down,” promising full airspace control and gravity bombs.

  • Legal Justification: Trump cites Commander-in-Chief powers (Article II). Rubio: “No administration has recognized the War Powers Act as constitutional.”

🇮🇱 Israel (Netanyahu Government)

  • Narrative: “Existential defensive war” against Iran and its proxies (Hezbollah, Shia militias).

  • New elements: Ultimatum for diplomats + expansion of ground operations in South Lebanon + evacuation orders “North of the Litani.”

🇮🇷 Iran

  • Retaliatory Rhetoric: Fars News Agency announced the “most destructive offensive in the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s armed forces.”

  • Actual Actions: 230 drones on US regional targets; closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

  • Internal Repression: Internet at 4% of normal levels. Basij checkpoints in Tehran. “Zero tolerance for dissidents” warnings.

🇷🇺 Russia / 🇨🇳 China

  • Russia: Condemned “unprecedented aggression,” claimed no evidence of an Iranian nuclear program, called for a UN Security Council session.

  • China: Wang Yi demanded “concrete actions for the safety of Chinese citizens and institutions in Iran” from Israel. Called for an immediate cessation of attacks.

Economic Impact and Supply Chains

  • Oil: Brent ~83 USD/b, WTI ~76 USD/b—up 14%+ in a week.

  • Gas: European prices surged over 70% after Qatari LNG production was halted due to Iranian drones.

  • Strait of Hormuz: Tanker traffic dropped to zero since March 3—an unprecedented closure of a key artery through which 20% of world oil demand passes.

  • WFP (World Food Programme): Humanitarian routes through Hormuz and the Red Sea are disrupted; the organization is seeking land corridors through Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan.
